In September 2025, Amgen Biotech Experience Tampa (ABE Tampa) hosted the 2025 Professional Development Institutes (PDIs) at the University of South Florida Tampa campus., delivering a rich and collaborative learning experience for both new and returning educators. These institutes focused on enhancing biotechnology lab skills, promoting curriculum integration, and building a strong community of practice.
The New Teacher PDI, held on September 13 and 15, welcomed 17 educators and centered on foundational training designed to build confidence and competence in implementing ABE biotechnology labs in the classroom. Participants took part in hands-on lab sessions covering key techniques, including micropipetting, gel loading, plasmid digestion, gel electrophoresis, and bacterial transformation using the pARA-R plasmid. In addition to lab work, new teachers received training in lab safety, classroom management, and ABE program logistics, ensuring they are well-prepared to successfully integrate these labs into their teaching practice.
On September 22, the Returning Teacher PDI welcomed eight experienced ABE educators for a hands-on training session that was built upon previous ABE training. The workshop introduced an exciting new lab: Colony PCR, where students will use PCR techniques to confirm the presence of a target plasmid. Teachers expressed strong enthusiasm for this addition, with many eager to bring the new lab into their classrooms. The session also included a preview of an upcoming series of labs focused on exploring precision medicine, offering a glimpse into future expansions of the curriculum. These new labs are designed to deepen students' understanding of molecular biotechnology and enrich their learning through real-world applications. Throughout the day, returning teachers refined their skills, exchanged classroom strategies, and explored innovative lab practices, strengthening both their technical expertise and instructional approaches within the ABE community.
