ABE Reminder - Staining DNA, viewing gels

This refresher video (3:36) walks teachers through how to stain DNA gels and view them safely using the Fotodyne transilluminator and camera setup used in earlier ABE UK training.

Key steps shown in the video

  • Staining the gel The video demonstrates how to apply the DNA stain to the gel after electrophoresis so that bands become visible. It’s a reminder of the older workflow used before MiniOne systems were introduced.
  • Using the Fotodyne transilluminator The gel is placed onto the Fotodyne light box, which illuminates the DNA bands. The video shows correct positioning and safe handling.
  • Capturing gel images A camera is used to photograph the gel while it’s on the transilluminator. The video shows how to align the camera and adjust the setup to get a clear image of the bands.

Important update noted in the description

The video includes a reminder that ABE UK now uses 1× TAE buffer instead of 1× SB buffer, which is a change from when the video was originally recorded.
