ABE Netherlands (ABE NL) is led by DNA-labs on the Road, a unique project in which six universities and an applied university of science collaborate to bring advanced DNA technologies into the classroom. Together the DNA-labs cover a broad range of subjects; health, nutrition, biotechnology, ethics, the environment, and forensic DNA research. Since 2006 university students have been visiting secondary schools to teach and inspire students about advanced life science research.

The ABE NL program allows DNA-labs on the Road to expand their program with two education boxes so that teachers can carry out the practical themselves in the classroom using the supplied equipment, reagents, and teaching materials. 

• Education box ‘Do You Taste PTC?’— from four distributions sites: Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Delft, and Groningen. During this practical, students learn that the ability to taste bitterness is genetically determined. The gene TAS2R38 encodes a taste receptor that detects the organic bitter compound PTC (phenylthiocarbamide). 
• Education box ‘The Harbour Porpoise Case’—per post or from distribution site Amsterdam. During this practical, students are guided through the case of a stranded harbour porpoise with mysterious injuries. Themes such as genetics, ecology, and DNA research come together in an accessible and interactive way.

The Master Teacher Fellowship is part of Amgen Biotech Experience. It is an annual program in which Amgen Biotech Experience teachers are recognized and given the opportunity to develop their own expertise and contribute to the Amgen Biotech Experience through LabXchange and other educational materials.
