ABE Implementations Among “Best Educational Practices” in Turkey!

Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) practices, which have a inquiry-based biotechnology curriculum designed to make students experience the excitement of scientific discovery, will be presented at the “Integration in Education Summit” to be held on 21-22 June 2022.

ABE practices, which enable teachers to bring biotechnology to their classrooms by supporting them through professional development programs and curriculum-based resources, were accepted to be shared as a sample practice within the scope of the Integrative Education Development Project carried out by the General Directorate of Special Education and Guidance Services of the Turkish Ministry of National Education. Best classroom practices, which are a reflection of the professional development processes experienced by ABE teacher from Keçiören Science and Art Center, one of our ABE schools, will be introduced at the “Integration in Education Summit” to be held on 21-22 June 2022 with the aim of disseminating good practices in education.

The summit, which was organized to create a sharing platform on educational practices through inclusion/integration with the co-financing of the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, will be held with the theme of "We are One with Our Differences". “A student who learns faster than his peers; Special talented students, who are defined as “individuals who are ahead in creativity, art and leadership capacity, have special academic abilities, can understand abstract ideas, like to act independently in their fields of interest, and perform at a high level”, are candidates for becoming the scientists of the future. In Turkey, gifted students receive training at the Science and Art Center in order to become aware of their individual talents and develop their capacities. At this point, our ABE teacher, who argues that the inclusion of biotechnology subjects in the education programs of gifted students, will enable the differentiation, enrichment and acceleration strategies to be implemented, stated that through this statement, she will present an example of an activity in order to raise awareness of gifted students about biotechnology and develop their creativity.

In her statement, Keçiören Science and Art Center teacher Meltem Küçükarslan stated that ABE practices will be disseminated in order to develop scientific literacy among gifted students.

““The event will be held in three stages. In the first stage, students are provided with information about DNA, micropipette and gel electrophoresis by using research and presentation methods. In the second stage, DNA isolation, micropipette use and gel electrophoresis and demonstration and test methods for DNA fingerprinting are used. In the third stage, discussion is made after DNA isolation, micropipette use and gel electrophoresis application. With the completion of these three phases, the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) Scientific Discovery event expands the development of scientific literacy.”
